Supportive Housing
The average monthly cost of housing in Fairfax County is nearly twice the national average, with prices even higher in Reston and Herndon. In recent years, rising real estate prices have pushed out many working families who provide essential services to our community. Teachers, police officers, firefighters, mid-level management employees, and other key participants in our community cannot afford to live in the neighborhoods where they work. Lower-wage workers, such as janitors and hospitality workers, struggle even more.
About one-quarter of households in Fairfax County earn less than $45,000, making them unable to afford the average rent. Recent statistics from the National Association of Realtors show that nearly two-thirds of working families in Fairfax County do not earn enough to qualify for a traditional mortgage. Reston Interfaith responds to the region’s affordable housing crisis by providing temporary shelter for homeless individuals and families and by offering affordable transitional and rental housing. We also provide extensive counseling, case management, child care, food, and other services to make it possible for people to keep jobs so they can afford housing. As a founding member of the Northern Virginia Affordable Housing Alliance, we are working in our community and across the region to highlight these critical housing needs and to impress that affordable housing is an investment needed to preserve our community's quality of life.
