Our History
From the early stages of development of the community of Reston, there were those who saw that not every need could be met through the physical planning of the community. They recognized that even the best laid plans may leave some out of the dream. The founders of Reston Interfaith, a diverse group of concerned individuals representing area religious organizations, anticipated those needs and offered an essential component – service – that quickly became a hallmark of our community’s culture. Since 1970, we have answered needs with concrete resources – attractive and affordable housing in our community, a child development center and parent education and support, food and financial assistance, and other programs that help men, women, and children live successfully in our community. Today, Reston Interfaith is recognized as a leading social service provider in Northern Virginia, offering comprehensive programs for about 20,000 individuals and families in Reston, Herndon, and the surrounding area each year. Through our investment, we help to build and sustain strong, vibrant neighborhoods and ensure a healthy future for the people we serve.
Reston Interfaith was founded in 1970 by area religious organizations to encourage the development of affordable housing for families and individuals in the area. We have since broadened our program scope and service area to answer the tough questions that so many of our neighbors are facing: Where will we live? Who will care for my children so I can work? How will I feed my family?
Even in affluent Northern Virginia there are people forced to live in cars, those who cannot afford a decent meal, and families being driven apart by stress. There are those who work hard but cannot create sufficient income to live in a decent home. Others struggle with limited employment opportunities, or no available work due to circumstances beyond their control. Even families who once lived comfortably can suddenly find themselves without a home and not knowing when or where they will live or eat. As the state of the economy has shown all too clearly, the security we feel in our jobs and our homes can be fleeting.
